my life | oberlin reunion
On a sweltering weekend back in May (yes, even then the weather was sweltering), we packed up our air mattress and kids and trekked to Oberlin, Ohio to stay in a stinky sweatlodge. We used to call them dorms. I discovered a few things: There's a reason we burned so much incence in college. I was an idiot not to spend more time in the art museum. And said museum has a painting titled "Feh." How could you not like a painting with that name?
The kids ran around Tappan Square. Joined in on a contact improv jam. Danced to the dirty-lyriced punk-band Bippy. Stayed up way too late. Illuminated. Experienced Oberlin's amazing student musicians (the Oberlin Baroque Orchestra!). Ate a lot of ice-cream from the new-to-us Cowhouse Creamery. (Worth the trip to Ohio just for their strawberry basil sorbet.) The husband and I got one evening of babysitting (really Oberlin, you needed to serve the kids bug juice?) to hear some genius spouted by theater professor Roger Copeland.
Oh, and just to make the experience nice and surreal, I hung out with my mentor--the alum who gave me my first internship--and bumped into an old editor boss of mine--the one who gave me my first food assignment. She didn't even go to Oberlin. And now a warning: There are way too many photos in this post. Enjoy.
